Identification of 4L60-E Transmissions

4L60-E Transmissions are found in almost all GM rear-wheel-drive and 4 wheel drive models. The unit consists of a 1 piece and 2 piece case of a cast aluminum alloy, the main case, removable bell housing, and tail housing. It has a distinctive six bolt hex rear output assembly pattern, pinned flare and o-ring fittings to accommodate a cooling circuit and a square oil pan.

A factory claimed lifetime fill of 8.4 or 11.4 or 14 quarts of Dexron III Dextron V or Dexron VI fluid is required based on the oil pan size. The E-designation identifies the 4L60-E Transmission as being electronically controlled with a sensor located in the front pump assembly. Close attention must be paid when swapping parts for this unit due to compatibility issues with the sensor, formally known as the Input Shaft Speed Sensor.
