It is an easy to find transmission either used or rebuilt and can be retrofitted into earlier transmission applications rather easily. The TH700-R4 was first introduced in GM production automobiles in 1982, as a Hydra-Matic MD-8 transmission, the MD-8 is cast in the bell-housing. Due to the transmission’s overdrive 30% or 0.69:1 ratio 4th gear GM was able to meet 1980’s fuel economy expectations. This transmission is available for both car and truck platforms. Aftermarket modifications and parts can make this component Big Block power ready for street racing and off-road events. 1990 redesignated this component to the 4L60.

Identification of the 700-R4 GM Transmission

The transmission is longitudinally positioned and is a four-speed overdrive automatic shift component widely used in Chevrolet and GMC rear wheel drive automobiles until 1992. It features a lock up torque converter with an electrical control solenoid to make for a no-slip-direct connection that allows for fuel savings and cooler transmission temps. The 700-R4 includes a 16-bolt square oil pan. A governor is placed on the driver’s side with a sleeve on the tail-housing containing the speedometer gear. The transmission comes with with a 27-spline input shaft on 1982-84 models or a 30 spline input with both units interchangeable with a proper torque converter addition. A throttle valve controls hydraulic line pressure and gearshift passes. The overall length of the transmission is 30.75 inches, with slight variation for Corvette models of 29.875. Gear ratios are as follows  3.06:1 for first gear, 1.62:1-second gear, 1:1-third and 0.70:1-fourth gear.
